Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are health fund rebates available for all types of massage therapy?

Health fund rebates are typically available for remedial massage, but they do not always cover relaxation or general therapeutic massages.

To qualify for a rebate, the massage must usually be performed by a provider who meets the requirements of your health fund.

This often includes holding specific qualifications, being registered with a recognised professional association and having a valid provider number.

Some health funds also require a referral from a doctor before they will process a claim.

It is also important to note that different funds and policies have varying levels of cover, meaning the amount you can claim back may differ depending on your plan.

  • How do I claim a health fund rebate for a massage?

Claiming a health fund rebate for a massage depends on the claiming options your provider offers.

Many health funds allow you to claim instantly at the clinic through the HICAPS system, which processes your rebate on the spot so you only pay the gap amount.

Alternatively, you may need to pay for the massage in full and then submit a claim online, through a mobile app or by visiting a branch of your health fund.

To do this, you will usually need a receipt that includes the provider’s name, provider number, business details, date of service, type of treatment and the amount paid.

Some funds may also require a doctor’s referral, so it is best to check with your insurer.

  • Why was my health fund rebate for a massage declined?

If your health fund rebate for a massage was declined, there are several possible reasons.

One common issue is that the massage was not classified as remedial massage, which is typically the only type covered under health fund policies.

Your therapist must also be registered with your health fund and have a valid provider number for the claim to be accepted.

Another reason could be that you have reached your annual limit for massage therapy claims, as most funds have an annual limit.

If your fund requires a referral from a doctor, this could also result in a declined claim.

Additionally, your policy may not include extras cover for remedial massage or the specific treatment provided may not be eligible.
